Respond to life instead of react to life.

timeless

A friend and I were discussing the qualities of time today.  It is apparent that time is inevitable.  It will eventually run out…his reply to this was, “With this knowledge comes solemn responsibility.”  It is our duty to embrace life, respond to it.  “Enjoy, create, have domain over, instruct and be inspired by…”  I find these words spoken by my friend to ring true in my heart.  I do not want to waste my days in wondering what the future holds or when time will end…I want to live for the moment.

sonnet 60 – shakespeare
Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore,
So do our minutes hasten to their end;
Each changing place with that which goes before,
In sequent toil all forwards do contend.
Nativity, once in the main of light,
Crawls to maturity, wherewith being crown’d,
Crooked elipses ‘gainst his glory fight,
And Time that gave doth now his gift confound.
Time doth transfix the flourish set on youth
And delves the parallels in beauty’s brow,
Feeds on the rarities of nature’s truth,
And nothing stands but for his scythe to mow:
And yet to times in hope my verse shall stand,
Praising thy worth, despite his cruel hand.

Time is a reoccurring theme in Shakespeare’s sonnets and writings.  He knew he was going to pass away eventually and so his writings would be proof of his life.  He was confident that he would be remembered for ages because of his works.  The whole sonnet is quite depressing because he portrays time as the enemy, the one that ends life.  It is the beginning and it is the end.  The two lines at the end contradict the whole sonnet in saying that even though he will pass on, his words will stand…such a powerful image.  Ah, I love it!
I actually wrote an essay on this sonnet in college and it always stuck with me, the meaning of the words and what Shakespeare was trying to convey.

The title for this ‘post’ is the image of the white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland.  The object he is carrying around with him is a heart-shaped clock and he is always rushing around, worrying about how late he is!  Would drive me mad if I lived my life like that…anyways! Time is a nasty bitch, but let’s all live happily and just get along, shall we?
